Unit 3 Section 2 : Plotting Points

In this section you will see how to plot points on a graph.
The x number comes first then the y number:

( x , y )

These numbers are called coordinates.

Example Question

Look at the graph below. Five points have been plotted on the grid. To get to point C you need to go 6 along in the x direction and 4 up in the y direction, so the coordinates of point C are ( 6 , 4 ).
Practice questions
Work out the answer to each of these questions then click on the button marked Click on this button below to see the correct answer to see whether you are correct.

(a) What are the coordinates of point E?
(b) Which point has coordinates ( 2 , 6 )?
(c) Is there a point plotted at coordinates ( 4 , 6 )?

Work out the answers to the questions below and fill in the boxes. Click on the Click this button to see if you are correct button to find out whether you have answered correctly. If you are right then will appear and you should move on to the next question. If appears then your answer is wrong. Click on to clear your original answer and have another go. If you can't work out the right answer then click on Click on this button to see the correct answer to see the answer.

Question 1
Fill in the coordinates of each of the points in the triangle below.

(a) Point A is at ( , )

(b) Point B is at ( , )

(c) Point C is at ( , )

Question 2
The diagram below shows the map of a theme park drawn on a set of axes. Fill in the coordinates of :

(a) the Burger Bar
( , )

(b) the start of the Thunder Ride
( , )

(c) the centre of the Bumper Boat Pond
( , )

(f) What would you be near if you were at ( 5 , 8 ) ?

(g) What would you be near if you were at ( 16 , 10 ) ?

Question 3
In this question you are going to plot some points on a set of axes. You click on the graph to plot a point This is a point you have plotted but not checked using the coordinates in the table on the left. Then you check to see if you have plotted the point correctly by clicking on the Click on this to see if the point you have just plotted is correct button. If you plotted the point correctly, it will be ticked This is a point which is correctly plotted and will appear. If you see a cross This is an incorrectly plotted point on the point then you have made a mistake and must try again. You can remove points you have plotted incorrectly by clicking on them for a second time.

Plot these points on the grid:

( 8 , 4 )

Question 4
In this question you are going to plot some more points on a set of axes. When you have finished plotting the points, you should say what shape has been produced, then click on the button to see the shape with the points joined up.
