Navigating Teacher Professional Development: Insights from Global Trends and Ethiopian Experiences
Abstract
Teacher professional development (TPD) plays a crucial role in enhancing teachers' knowledge and practice for more effective teaching. This study's data analysis revealed that TPD interventions that treat teacher knowledge domains as an integrated whole significantly benefit secondary mathematics teachers and their students compared to those that approach knowledge in a fragmented manner or provide no intervention at all. Among the groups studied—Integrated, Segregated, and Comparison—all showed improvements over time. However, the Integrated Group, which experienced a holistic TPD approach, demonstrated substantial gains in knowledge compared to the Segregated Group, which focused solely on content knowledge. The Segregated Group, in turn, performed better than the Control Group, which received no intervention. Even when controlling for variables such as experience, education, gender, and grades taught, the Integrated Group consistently outperformed their Segregated and Comparison counterparts, reinforcing the value of a comprehensive approach to TPD.
